The Historic Island

Providence´s history dates back to the time of discovery where they are discussed the first landings between 1,498 and 1,502. In its early years of colonization the island took English inhabitants, Dutch, Spanish and Jamaicans. The first black slaves made their arrival in the middle of the seventeenth century in order to them to work on crops of snuff and cotton that would flourishing economy of the island (cabrera 1980)

There are few records of the total population of the island in different periods of history, but many census results showed a gradual increase from 1,789, in which 10 individuals were recorded, up to 1,973 in the population reached 2,605 inhabitants, the official census 1835 recorded a total of 342 inhabitants on the island, of which 84 were slaves
